Broken Tooth?

I think that one of my teeth is broken or at least part of it has broke off, it is one of my teeth on the top row it is the back of the tooth. Part of the tooth feels sharp, but I am in no pain...at all. It is one of my molars just up from the wisdom teeth on the top right side. I am very particular with my teeth, brushing and flossing them at least twice a day. I have not seen a dentist in close to 10 years. If a tooth is really broken or chipped shouldn%26#039;t there be pain involved? If a small chip has broken off is it cause to see a dentist if there is not any pain involved? I despise going to the dentist and do not want to go unless there is something threatening to the tooth, and I have always heard that if there is something wrong with a tooth then it is going to hurt. At least that has been my experience. Can someone that knows shed some light on this subject?

Broken Tooth?
You have a common problem that I see many times a week. You pointed out that you are %26quot;very particular%26quot; about your teeth; that%26#039;s great! I wish more of my patients were. Your concern about pain is valid. However, in my experience, if you let the condition go untreated for too long it may develop into a real significant issue for you. Many times minor fractures of the tooth%26#039;s outer shell (enamel) can be repaired with little to no discomfort. My recommendation is to visit with a dentist and have the tooth restored.

Best wishes!
Reply:NO pain.. . It will dull after awhile and not be so sharp.
Reply:You are soooo particular you don%26#039;t go to the dentist?
Reply:it sounds like a flake of enamel has chipped off if you are in no pain you dont have to see the docter but keep in mind the enamel is thinner now and may take more care
Reply:yes it hurts when the tooth is broken spec from the root..but u can visit the dentist if u r worried over the cosmetic look of that broken tooth..
Reply:You%26#039;re not so particular about your teeth if you haven%26#039;t seen a dentist for 10 years. I%26#039;m not sure what you%26#039;re afraid of.

You can chip a tooth and not have pain. The nerves are at the root of the tooth. A dentist can either fill/cap the chipped tooth, or grind down the sharp edge.
Reply:Exact thing happened to my husband. Sorry to say, but you should go to the dentist.

When a back tooth breaks, it leaves the nerve vulnerable. Sooner or later you%26#039;ll need a root canal (not fun).

My recommendation is to go to the dentist and get it pulled. That would be a lot less painful and a lot less expensive than a root canal and the crown you%26#039;d need after.

Getting it pulled is not so bad with Novocaine, and many dentists will even give you anesthesia. Good luck.
Reply:No a chipped/broken tooth may not hurt! It will be more likely to get decay now. You may want to have it ground down a bit so it isn%26#039;t sharp. I would be wondering why it broke. Now would be a good time to go and find out why it broke and make sure you don%26#039;t have a big cavity that weakened it! You should be able to handle one trip in 10 years!!!
Reply:If indeed your tooth is broken you definitely need to see a dentist. Even though you have no pain and you may not have any cavities this is exactly how one could and probably will start untreated. Now that the enamel is gone in that spot it will definitely start to decay.

I would make and appointment and atleast go in for a check-up, you are due.

I hate the dentist too but it%26#039;s something we all must do. You might even get a free toothbrush and sticker if you are good lol

Bets of luck!!
Reply:This happened to me before it was my bottom molar i was like you and left it BIG mistake ended up having a deep filling if i were you i would go and get it capped this dos not hurt just had a tooth capped myself you do need to get work on it though because if you dont it will eventually break off more and increases the chances of tooth decay hope this helps!
Reply:That started happening with one of my teeth in the back of my mouth a few years back and I decided to just let it go without seeing an dentist....BIG MISTAKE! Gradually more and more broke off and eventually every time I opened my mouth and air would come in, it would cause a sharp pain that became a pain that was never ending, at least until I broke down and went to see a dentist. The process from where the tooth first chipped to the point of never ending pain took about 2 months.
Reply:I would go to the dentist. I had a filling that fell out and it had no pain unitll of all things, I bit into bread and found out hard that it had...boy was that painfull. Teeth are better takend care of asap..the longer you wait...the worse it gets. Exposed nerves (if broken) can be a bigggg owwww. When it hits, it hits. Something small, the can fix really easy.
Reply:u know tooth has enamel in the outer part ,dentine in between and toot insie which contains nerve and blood vessel for tooth.so often u can broke ur tooth without knowing if enamel and sometimes if dentin is involved ,but invariably u will get pain if root is involved .samethings happen to me few years ago ....i havent pain ...but when i visited the dentist root was already involved .so they did root canal treatment difficult procedure and later on they provide cap to protect teeth.so pls go to the dentist if u want to save ur tooth.
Reply:If the tooth feels sharp, it%26#039;s a fracture... as in something did break off of it. You won%26#039;t know if it was tooth structure or filling material unless you have it checked out. Best case scenario is that all you%26#039;ll need is to have the area smoothed down if it%26#039;s a minimal break.

Not all fractured teeth hurt. If the nerve is dead, you won%26#039;t have any pain.

That%26#039;s great that you take such good care of your teeth, but a professional cleaning every now and then couldn%26#039;t hurt. Besides, brushing and flossing can%26#039;t remove all of the plaque/calculus/tarter that is probably hanging out under your gums~

.........and I%26#039;d hate for you to wake up swollen and in agonizing pain one of these mornings, so at least have it checked out.

Good Luck!

:)
Reply:It depends on how badly it is chipped. You may want to get a crown on there, because if you don%26#039;t it may eventually, get a cavity in it. It is probably a small chip and not near the nerve, that%26#039;s why it doesn%26#039;t hurt. I have had a lot, a lot, of dentistry done. I have probably 15 crowns. So, no, it doesn%26#039;t have to hurt to need to be fixed. There may have been some decay there, and that is why it chipped. So, if you want to save it, and I suggest you do,{ keep them as long as you can} make an appointment and go.
Reply:As you grow older, the pulpal cavity that contains the nerves, lymphoma and blood vessel become smaller...so a damaged tooth won%26#039;t hurt nearly as much as it would if you were younger.

The maxillary molars have five cusps and it sounds as if one cusp broke off (extremely common for women after pregnancy by the way) and possibly the dentin (main body of the tooth) is exposed...the dentin does not have nerves...so it won%26#039;t hurt. However, the dentin is what the enamel covers and protects from bacteria and wear...it is relatively soft...something like the difference between lead and copper. You should have it checked and a filling applied if it is exposed...otherwise, in a year or two, you will be looking at having a root canal....$70-90 for a filling now or $600 for a root canal later...in either case, you will have to pay for Xrays...about $30 for a bite wing....or $75 for a full panorama of the whole mouth.
